Education Specialist – based in Asmara, Eritrea
Finn Church Aid (FCA) is Finland’s largest development co-operation organisation and specialises in supporting governments and local communities in three priority areas: right to livelihoods, right to quality education and right to peace.
In the FCA programme Right to Quality Education, FCA’s Education Specialists are working within the two leading teacher training institutions, Asmara Community College of Education (ACCE) and Eritrea Institute of Technology (EiT), College of Education (CoE) to build institutional capacity to deliver quality education. Programme’s main objective is to improve quality education through teacher education and catalyse educational innovations.
Responsibilities:
The Education Specialist will report to the Helsinki Head Office. Education Specialist will manage the development and implementation of Finn Church Aid’s (FCA) Right to Quality Education projects activities in the Asmara Community College of Education and the College of Education (in the Eritrean Institute of Technology in Mai Nefhi) and the ensuring that project activities are implemented in respect to donors’ and FCA’s policies and principles. Education Specialist will act as a team leader for FCA’s Quality Education programme team in Eritrea.
Education development:
- Development, coordination, and monitoring of all capacity development initiatives at the Asmara Community College of Education and the Eritrean Institute of Technology, College of Education.
- Monitor and evaluate faculty development initiatives through collaborative action research.
- Enhance research capacity of the two colleges through support to proposal writing, collaborative research and research publishing.
- Maintain and develop networks with academic partners and relevant interest groups in Eritrea.
- Provide strategic and content-specific input to FCA country strategy, project proposals and reports.
- Participation in recruitment and induction of Teachers Without Borders (TWB) volunteers.
- Supervise and provide professional support to TWB volunteers, monitor and support the cooperation between TWB and Asmara Community College of Education.
- Represent FCA and the country program in Eritrea in the education field as agreed; build influential relationships and develop national and international networks to support sustainable programming, particularly in the area of higher education development.
- Support fundraising, advocacy activities, and donor relations at country level.
Management:
- Coordination of FCA’s Right to Quality Education programme activities with relevant national and international counterparts, consultants, and volunteers.
- Conduct regular meetings with project staff and key stakeholders to assess progress toward objectives, discuss issues and assist in finding solutions to challenges identified
- Manage programme finances together with the finance and project personnel at country level as required.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education with proven substantial research experience
- Experience in leading teacher trainings and professional development programs; conducting applied education research, teacher education curriculum design etc.
- Extensive work experience from developing countries, preferably with experience in East Africa
- Experience in project management
- Superb negotiation skills, cross-cultural skills, willingness to learn, flexibility and ability to adapt to different situations
- Dynamic and experienced teacher trainer, with experience in international contexts
- Demonstrated ability contextualize key processes and methods of teacher education to different contexts
- Ability to assist and work with financial issues relevant to the programme and FCA’s presence in the country.
The fixed-term contract for this position will be made until 31.12.2017 with four months’ probation period, starting as soon as possible. The compensation is based on FCA Compensation System and depends on prior work experience. The position is a no-family post.
